IS BRIAN WILSON RAGING?

Updated FBCS

27 Aug 2014

Revisiting fizzy beer composite scores a week after the original post shows how pitchers performed but also reveals some flaws with the metric.

Blue in the table below means a positive change, red means that pitcher’s metric went in the wrong direction over the past week.

The biggest beef is that Fangraphs considers Paul Maholm a reliever despite his season-ending injury. Maholm didn’t pitch in the past week but still skipped over BWeez and Chris Withrow in FBCS rankings.

Weez made two appearances in the past week and, although he didn’t allow any runs, he also didn’t strike out any batters. His unimpressive outings hurt his WHIP, which is worst among Dodger relievers.

Also troubling: Jamey Wright’s FBCS increased despite allowing two runs in 2.2 innings, more evidence that fizzy beer metrics place too much value on the number of appearances a pitcher makes.
